A strong warning has been issued in Andhra Pradesh as District Collector Chadalavada Nagarani stated that neglecting parents and elderly citizens will lead to strict legal action. Speaking at a district-level training program in Bhimavaram, she emphasized that caring for elders is not just a moral duty but also a legal responsibility under the law.

Neglecting Parents Legal Action: Law and Social Responsibility

Addressing the gathering at the Vasishta Conference Hall in the District Collectorate, Collector Nagarani highlighted the importance of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act. She said that in Indian culture, parents are regarded as living deities, yet the rising number of complaints from senior citizens reflects a worrying decline in values.

She expressed concern that despite being taught to respect parents and teachers from childhood, many fail to practice these values in real life. This gap has made legal protection necessary, she noted, adding that neglecting parents can now result in legal consequences.

The Collector urged citizens to understand that caring for elders contributes to building a responsible and compassionate society. She reminded people that everyone will eventually grow old, and the way they treat their parents today will influence how they are treated in the future.

Neglecting Parents Legal Action: Awareness and Family Responsibility

Emphasizing the role of youth, Nagarani advised them to spend quality time with their parents and elders despite busy schedules. She said emotional support and companionship are equally important for the well-being of senior citizens.

She also encouraged individuals to become self-reliant rather than depending on parental property, stressing that a healthy society is built when elders are treated with dignity, love, and care. Senior citizens were advised to stay aware of their rights and approach authorities if they face neglect or harassment.

Joint Collector P. Rahul Kumar Reddy directed officials to resolve complaints from senior citizens by engaging with family members and ensuring amicable solutions. He emphasized coordination between revenue and police departments for effective handling of such cases.

Awareness on Senior Citizens Rights and Welfare

Participants from the Senior Citizens Welfare Association stressed the importance of awareness about legal rights, particularly in matters such as property registration. Officials advised elders to make informed decisions and seek legal guidance when necessary.

District Welfare Officer T. Ram Kumar, Narasapuram RDO Dasiraju, association leaders, counseling officers, police officials, students, and legal representatives attended the program, highlighting the collective effort required to address issues faced by senior citizens.

Reinforcing her message, Collector Nagarani made it clear that neglecting parents is both a social failure and a legal offence. She called upon society to uphold traditional values while ensuring that the rights and dignity of senior citizens are protected at all times.
