Andhra Pradesh Assembly session discussing Amaravati capital issue

Leaders speak during Assembly session on Amaravati capital and past policy decisions

Amaravati Assembly debate dominated proceedings as leaders across the ruling side strongly criticized former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy over his policies related to the state capital. The session, held to grant legal status to Amaravati, saw ministers, MLAs, and senior leaders revisiting key decisions taken during the previous government.

Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu said he expected the opposition to attend and participate in the debate, but expressed disappointment over their absence, stating there was no visible attempt to address past issues.

Leaders Highlight Issues Faced by Amaravati Farmers

Several members spoke about the difficulties faced by Amaravati farmers during the earlier administration. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha referred to incidents during protests, especially involving women farmers, and said these events had a strong impact on public opinion.

She noted that Amaravati was initially supported as the capital before a shift in policy introduced the three-capital proposal. Leaders also acknowledged the prolonged protests by farmers, particularly women, calling it a significant movement in the state’s history.

Ministers Criticize Policy Changes and Political Approach

Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu alleged that attempts were made to create divisions among regions and communities during the previous government. He stated that despite criticism, their party remained committed to Amaravati as the capital.

IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh presented photographs in the Assembly highlighting past protest incidents. He said these visuals reflected the situation during the Amaravati agitation.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan expressed concern over the repeated changes in capital decisions in the state’s history. He emphasized the need for stability and supported the current government’s approach.

Discussion Focuses on Past Decisions, Limited Talk on Current Delays

Other members, including Vasantha Krishna Prasad and Madhavi Reddy, also criticized the previous administration’s decisions, particularly the three-capital proposal.

While the session largely focused on past policies and their impact, there was limited discussion on the current status of benefits and support expected by Amaravati farmers, which some observers found notable.
