The ongoing Laddu Controversy surrounding the sacred prasadam of Lord Venkateswara Swamy at Tirumala has not only triggered a fierce political battle in Andhra Pradesh but has also raised serious questions about the role and silence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While the ruling and opposition parties in the state continue to blame each other, the BJP’s cautious approach has become a subject of intense debate among devotees and political observers.
The controversy began when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu alleged that animal fat had been mixed in the sacred laddu prasadam during the previous government led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The allegation shocked millions of devotees across India and abroad, as the Tirumala laddu is considered one of the holiest offerings in Hindu tradition and is deeply connected to the faith of Lord Venkateswara’s followers.

Laddu Controversy Sparks Political War in Andhra Pradesh
Devotees expressed anguish and anger, stating that any adulteration of the prasadam was unacceptable. The issue quickly escalated into a major political confrontation between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), with both sides presenting their own versions of the truth.
The state government initially ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe. However, the YSRCP approached the Supreme Court of India, seeking an independent investigation. The Supreme Court later monitored the case and directed a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The chargesheet filed by the investigating agency reportedly confirmed that adulteration in the prasadam had taken place. However, it did not conclusively establish the presence of animal fat, stating that while the probability of finding such traces was low, it could not be completely ruled out.
Following this, the YSRCP intensified its attack on Chandrababu Naidu, accusing him of misleading devotees and hurting religious sentiments. The party demanded that the Chief Minister apologise publicly. In contrast, the TDP maintained that serious irregularities had occurred during the previous regime and accused the YSRCP of trying to evade responsibility.
The political temperature rose further when senior YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu made controversial remarks against Chandrababu Naidu, triggering protests from TDP cadres. The situation even led to law and order tensions, including protests and police action.
BJP Silence in Laddu Controversy Raises Serious Questions
Amid this intense political confrontation, attention gradually shifted to the BJP’s role. The BJP, which often positions itself as a strong defender of Hindu religious interests, has not taken an aggressive or clear stand on the Laddu Controversy. Neither senior central leaders nor key state leaders have made strong statements directly targeting those allegedly responsible.
This silence has surprised many political observers and devotees. Critics argue that if the controversy involved the alleged adulteration of prasadam at one of Hinduism’s most sacred temples, the BJP would normally be expected to respond strongly.
There are also political allegations that the BJP’s neutral stance may be influenced by its political calculations. Some critics claim that the party is trying to maintain a balanced relationship with various regional forces rather than directly confronting the YSRCP.
Questions have also been raised regarding certain officials who served in the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) administration during the period when the alleged adulteration took place. Allegations have surfaced in political circles that some officials were protected or not held accountable immediately. However, no direct official confirmation from the BJP has addressed these claims.
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and other TDP leaders have repeatedly spoken about the issue, calling for accountability and transparency. They have emphasised that the faith of devotees must be protected and that those responsible must face consequences.
Meanwhile, BJP-associated religious organisations, seers, and Hindu groups have also largely refrained from launching major protests. Apart from issuing limited statements, there has been no sustained nationwide campaign from these groups on the Laddu Controversy.
Investigation Findings Add Twist to Laddu Controversy
Another development that attracted attention was the legal intervention by Subramanian Swamy, who approached the Supreme Court in connection with the issue. His legal position and statements added another dimension to the already complex political and legal battle.
Political analysts believe the BJP’s approach reflects strategic caution rather than indifference. As a national party with electoral interests across multiple states, the BJP may be trying to avoid taking sides in a state-level political confrontation that involves strong regional parties.
However, for devotees, the issue goes beyond politics. The Tirumala laddu is not just a religious offering but a symbol of faith and tradition. Any allegation of adulteration deeply affects religious sentiments.
The Laddu Controversy continues to remain both a legal matter and a political flashpoint. While investigative agencies have presented their findings, political parties continue to interpret the conclusions in ways that suit their narratives.
The BJP’s silence, whether strategic or coincidental, has now become an integral part of the larger political discussion. As the investigation process moves forward and political debates continue, devotees and the public alike are waiting for clarity, accountability, and reassurance that the sanctity of one of Hinduism’s holiest traditions will always be protected.
