Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Y.S. Sharmila amid reports of a possible family reconciliation

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Y.S. Sharmila. Reports suggest the long-running family and property dispute may be moving towards a possible settlement.

Vijayawada, September 20: The Jagan-Sharmila family dispute may be heading towards a settlement, with reports on social media suggesting that former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has reached an understanding with his sister Y.S. Sharmila and their mother Y.S. Vijayamma over financial and property-related matters.

According to these reports, Jagan has agreed to give Sharmila her share of the family assets and has resolved the financial issues between them. However, there has been no official confirmation from Jagan, Sharmila or Vijayamma on the reported settlement.

Differences Between Jagan and Sharmila Turned Into a Property Dispute

After Jagan Mohan Reddy won the 2019 Assembly elections with a large majority and became Chief Minister, reports began emerging about differences between him and his sister Sharmila. The issue did not become public immediately.

A few years later, Sharmila launched a political party in Telangana and undertook a padayatra, saying her objective was to bring back the rule associated with her father, the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. However, she did not receive the expected political response in Telangana. She subsequently joined the Congress and later became the president of the party’s Telangana unit.

After entering Andhra Pradesh politics, Sharmila began openly criticising her brother. She alleged that she had not been given her share of the property accumulated by their father and accused Jagan of targeting her. Jagan, in turn, criticised Sharmila and alleged that she was meeting his political opponents, including those who had opposed Rajasekhara Reddy.

The differences became more visible during the marriage of Sharmila’s son. Later, Vijayamma wrote public letters concerning the property dispute and also alleged that Jagan was not giving his sister her share. The family differences continued until the 2024 Assembly elections.

Attempts to Reconcile After 2024 Elections

Following Jagan’s defeat in the 2024 elections, reports emerged that close associates of both Jagan and Rajasekhara Reddy were making efforts to bring the siblings together.

According to the reports, some of Rajasekhara Reddy’s close associates advised Jagan to resolve the family differences before the next elections. It is now being claimed that Jagan has agreed to a settlement over the division of family assets.

A senior YSRCP leader close to Jagan reportedly told this writer that Jagan had agreed to give Sharmila her share of the property. However, the claim has not been independently confirmed.

Sharmila’s Visit to Tadepalli May Signal a New Beginning

Against this backdrop, Sharmila is reportedly expected to visit Jagan’s residence in Tadepalli to personally invite him to her daughter’s wedding.

Her visit does not necessarily mean that all differences within the family have been completely resolved. However, it could indicate that a channel for reconciliation between the siblings has opened.

Even if the property dispute is settled, questions remain over their future political relationship. It is unclear whether Jagan would support Sharmila politically or whether the two could once again find themselves on opposing sides.

During the period when Jagan was in jail, Sharmila had undertaken a nearly 1,500-kilometre padayatra while campaigning for the YSR Congress Party. Subsequently, there was speculation that she had expected a Rajya Sabha seat but did not receive one, which reportedly contributed to her disappointment.

If the siblings reach a broader understanding, questions will remain about whether Sharmila could receive any political role in the future, either within the party or in a possible government.

At the same time, there has been speculation that Vijayamma wants to see Jagan return as Chief Minister and has been trying to persuade Sharmila to reconcile with her brother. According to these reports, she has been telling the family that unity would be important if Jagan is to make another bid for the Chief Minister’s post.

For now, however, the reported property settlement and reconciliation remain unconfirmed.

When Jagan was previously questioned by the media about his differences with his sister, he had played them down by saying that such “ghar ghar ki kahani” — family stories — exist in every household.

The question now is whether the long-running Jagan-Sharmila family dispute is finally moving towards a happy ending.
