Mega Rajayyapeta Steel Project to Create 30,000 Jobs and Surpass Vizag Steel Plant Capacity
Bhimavaram, March 5:Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma announced that all arrangements have been completed for the establishment of a prestigious Integrated Greenfield Steel Plant (ISP) at Rajayyapeta in Nakkapalli mandal of Anakapalli district, which is set to transform the industrial landscape of Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing a media conference in Bhimavaram on Thursday, the minister said the Bhoomi Puja ceremony for the massive steel project, being developed by ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, will be held on March 23 at 4 PM.

First Phase to Surpass Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Capacity
Srinivasa Varma explained that the first phase of the project will begin with an investment of ₹80,000 crore, and it is expected to be completed by 2029. Once completed, the plant will produce 8.2 million tonnes of steel per year (MTPA).
He pointed out that this production capacity will be higher than the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, which currently has a capacity of 7.3 MTPA. In the next phase, the plant’s capacity will be expanded to 18.7 MTPA, making it the largest steel plant in the country.
Employment for 30,000 Youth
The Union Minister said the mega project will create massive employment opportunities for local youth, with around 30,000 direct jobs expected in the first phase itself.
He also noted that receiving all necessary approvals from both the central and state governments within just one year is a record achievement. He credited the success of the project to the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, and the efforts of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh.

Eco-Friendly Steel Plant with Green Belt
Highlighting the environmental aspects, Srinivasa Varma said the state government has allocated 2,200 acres for the project, out of which 33% (over 700 acres) will be developed as a green belt to ensure environmental protection.
To reduce pollution, NMDC has approved a 245-km slurry pipeline from Kirandul in Chhattisgarh to Rajayyapeta for transporting raw materials.
The plant will require 860 MW of power, of which 220 MW will be generated internally, while the remaining will be sourced from the power grid. The project will require 135 MLD of water per day, which will be supplied through Polavaram canal water and recycled water systems.

The minister reiterated that the central government aims to achieve 300 million tonnes of domestic steel production capacity by 2030, in line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision.
He expressed happiness that during his tenure in the steel ministry, he could secure a ₹11,500 crore revival package for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and also facilitate the establishment of this mega steel plant in Nakkapalli, which will significantly boost Andhra Pradesh’s industrial growth.
