The AP Women’s Commission Sexual Harassment Probe at the Nori Ramasastry Government Ayurveda College in Vijayawada has raised serious concerns about student safety and institutional accountability. Following an email complaint alleging sexual harassment by faculty, the Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission swiftly stepped in to investigate the matter and ensure justice for the affected students.

Allegations Surface

The AP Women’s Commission Sexual Harassment Probe began after an anonymous complaint highlighted misconduct by faculty members toward female students. Acting promptly, Commission Chairperson Dr. Rayapati Shailaja conducted a surprise inspection on April 22. She interacted separately with students and faculty to gather direct insights into the allegations.

According to the Commission, the complaint also pointed out serious lapses in how the college handled earlier allegations internally. The student claimed that the inquiry process lacked transparency and fairness, raising doubts about institutional intent. The absence of the complainant’s identity further suggested fear and vulnerability among students.

Fear and Institutional Lapses

During the AP Women’s Commission Sexual Harassment Probe, students reportedly admitted that harassment incidents were real but expressed fear of retaliation. Many stated they were hesitant to speak openly earlier due to threats of academic consequences, including failing examinations. This fear reflects a troubling environment where victims feel unsafe even reporting misconduct.

The Commission also found irregularities in the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). Although the complaint was received on March 1, the ICC was formed only on April 2, indicating delay. Moreover, the committee lacked mandatory external members, violating legal guidelines meant to ensure impartiality. The college’s report dismissed the allegations as baseless after a student denied sending the complaint email, further intensifying concerns about procedural flaws.

Dr. Shailaja emphasized that educational institutions must guarantee a safe atmosphere. She stated that harassment undermines students’ confidence and future, and strict action will be taken against those found guilty, including removal from service if required.

Assurance of Justice

The AP Women’s Commission Sexual Harassment Probe has reassured students that their safety is a priority. The Commission has promised corrective measures to create a secure and fear-free academic environment. It also assured that justice will be delivered and accountability enforced.

Authorities are now expected to take stringent steps not only to punish offenders but also to strengthen systems that prevent such incidents in the future. This case has once again highlighted the importance of transparent grievance mechanisms in educational institutions.
