Neurology team at Aster Ramesh Hospitals conducts epilepsy awareness programme on Purple Day

Vijayawada, March 26, 2026: Marking Purple Day 2026, a global initiative to spread awareness about epilepsy, the Department of Neurology at Aster Ramesh Hospitals conducted a special awareness programme to address misconceptions and promote early treatment.

Observed in over 85 countries since its inception in 2008, Purple Day aims to reduce stigma surrounding epilepsy, a neurological disorder affecting millions worldwide.

Understanding Epilepsy and Treatment Options

Speaking at the event, neurologist Dr. Harini Pavuluri explained that epilepsy is a brain-related disorder marked by recurrent seizures without an obvious cause.

She noted that:

  • Nearly 70% of patients can control seizures with medication
  • Around 30% suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy

“For such patients, epilepsy surgery can be an effective solution. With timely evaluation, selected patients can achieve complete seizure freedom,” she said.

Dr. Harini also warned that uncontrolled seizures can affect education, career, mental health, and in severe cases, may lead to injuries or sudden death.

She highlighted the use of advanced diagnostic tools like:

  • Video EEG
  • MRI scans

Modern treatment options such as Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) are also helping reduce seizure frequency and severity.

Successful Surgeries Offer New Hope

Doctors at Aster Ramesh Hospitals reported the successful completion of two complex epilepsy surgeries in children suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy.

  • Two patients, aged 11 and 8 years, underwent surgical treatment
  • Both are now leading seizure-free, normal lives

In one case, an 11-year-old girl who had been experiencing 40–50 seizures daily since age 4 underwent a complex two-stage hemispherectomy. She is now completely seizure-free.

He highlighted the availability of:

  • CT Scan and MRI
  • Video EEG monitoring
  • ENMG
  • Advanced neuro operation theatres

“With expert specialists and modern infrastructure, we are delivering international-standard treatment for neurological disorders ranging from epilepsy to stroke,” he said.

The programme was also attended by neurologists Dr. Lakshmi Anusha, Dr. Prashanth Babu, Dr. Rajesh, neurosurgeon Dr. Pruthvi, interventional radiologist Dr. Anne Mahesh, and COO Dr. Suma.
